Subway U3

Subway U3 runs partly outside through the center of Hamburg. Riding this line can replace a sightseeing tour especially the part which goes along the harbour. I was thinking of planning an urban sketching workshop on this part of the line. So I met A. again, who is a young great sketcher, full of energy and patience. We spent the whole day sketching scenes at several U3 stations.

We started at LANDUNGSBRÜCKEN. From here you can see the harbour, (here on the left side) but I prefered to sketch the station with the PEGELTURM – the tower that shows the water level of the river Elbe.

On the other side I had the view to the tower of the famous church ST. MICHAELIS, familiar as MICHEL. It’s a landmark of the city and considered to be one of the finest Hanseatic Protestant baroque churches.

Our next stop was BAUMWALL. From here you have a great view of the port with its new Elbphilharmonie building, also called ELPHI, which Hamburg is very proud of. It was not easy to find a comfortable position to sketch. While standing sketching in the narrow path, we had to take care that our colours wouldn't fall from the railing down to the street.

We had lunch in one of the restaurants nearby, in the crowded Portuguese area, with lots of restaurants and bars.

At the station RÖDINGSMARKT I decided to sketch the church of St. Nicolas. The church lies now in ruins, with only its tower remaining, serving as a memorial.

We than had enough of all the noise and dirt in the subway stations. We needed a quiet break which we found in the Cafe on the Lightvessel (Feuerschiff) in the harbour. A. was still full of energie and made a beautiful drawing of many small boats, which made me dizzy just to look at it. I was only able to make a quick and simple sketch of the ELPHI.

I am still not sure how to plan my workshop, but we had a great day!

Ottensen

I met A. today in Ottensen, Altona and we spent some hours sketching together.
